Signs of online video’s importance in the web these days are everywhere, and this is one more: NASA is promoting an online video competition – for high schoolers in the US only, sorry! – in an effort to communicate with younger students.
Students are consuming over 10 hours of media a day and video is increasingly important to communicate and inform about science. NASA is looking for talented High School students to create videos that engage students in Earth Science.
The implications are clear: they are putting their faith in the youth’s education in online video.
But even from NASA, that is not the only sign they bet heavy on the medium and have understood it. If you look at their official Youtube channel, they have 2053 videos in there, which is a LOT, and 37,479,957 views amongst them all.
Those are big numbers for any major brand.
Moreover, the structure of this contest, by having students make a 2 minute video and then uploading it to Youtube with the tag “NASAREELscience2012″ propagates its influence and awareness even further.
Nicely done NASA! This will not only empower young people’s imagination for science and space, but also getting creative with online video.
It also shows that be you a for-profit or not company, there are plenty of ways you can use online video – and either way, there are always benefits in using it.
This contest is open til 11:59pm EST on February 15, 2013, and for more information check the contest page here.
